CHURCHYARD
On entering the gate, to the left in front of the church, is a memorial to local people who perished in the 1914-1919 conflict.
There are also believed to be two or three separate headstones of those who lost their life in the First World War, situated in the area beyond the garden of Chadwell House, and clearance of the undergrowth in this area has revealed two to date.
Of special interest, to the east of the church, is a grave with a unique headstone to a Japanese seaman. The main inscription:- "The tomb (or grave) of the late Yamazaki Kazuo, 4th Officer of the 'Kawachi Maru'". The English inscription reads: - In memory of Kadzuo Yamazaki aged 22 a faithful and zealous officer of the Nippon Tusen Karisha, who died on board the s/s 'Kawachi Maru' at Tilbury Dock on July 13th 1899 in the execution of his duty whilst endeavouring to extinguish a fire on board the steamer." A further inscription on the base stone in Japanese characters only translates as follows:- "This was sculpted by Yokomiso Toyokichi from Yokohama City in the great (or glorious) Japanese Empire."
A memorial garden has been made at the bottom of the south face of the tower, and visitors are most welcome to spend some time there for meditation and prayer.
