CLOCKS
There are no obvious signs of any clocks in the building but do not be deceived! Proceed through the South door to the Vestry (this was once an outside door leading to the churchyard) and look on the eastern jamb of the doorway. There you will find two or three scratch dials - Mass clocks as some people call them. There is another one on the external south wall on the support pillar between the chancel and the nave. Before clocks became common in the 15th century some means of telling the congregation of the time of the services was necessary simple stick was placed in the central hole and its shadow told the hour. The time of mass was indicated by a mark in one of the radiating lines. These "clocks" date from mediaeval times, and we believe are the oldest clocks in Chadwell.
